The Backstory

Alf began his writing career in the late 80s after several years working around the globe as an oilfield geologist. He began as a trainee reporter on the Fishguard County Echo in SW Wales and within two-years was the paper’s editor, before moving on to work for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park as press and publications officer.

He became a freelancer in the late 90s, since when he has been a regular contributor to all the major UK broadsheets and a global range of quality newspapers, magazines and websites as well as editor of various publications including ‘Surf’ magazine and ‘Adventure Wales’ magazine. In addition he has been gear editor/reviewer for various ski and outdoor magazines and for the Ski Club of Great Britain.

Alf is also the author or contributor to a number of travel guides, the latest of which, ‘Ultimate Ski Adventures’, a guide to the world’s best ski areas, was published in November ’20.

He splits his time between the Pembrokeshire coast, travels in his campervan with Finn the border collie and winters in the French ski resort of Les Arcs, for which he is an ambassador.
